Any treatment that stabilises the airway or helps it to remain open, is clinically proven to be the most effective treatment. The medical options for treating Obstructive Sleep Apnoea are:
-
Nutrition, lifestyle and weight loss (where applicable) programs, because living with a healthier body is known to have a significant, direct positive effect on OSA. Intus Healthcare have degree qualified, experienced Nutritionists who can help you with this.
-
CPAP / APAP Therapy - C = ‘Continuous (fixed) Positive Airway Pressure’ or A = Automatic (variable) Positive Airway Pressure consisting of an air pump with a connecting hose and breathing mask worn whilst sleeping, which gently creates an ‘air splint’ keeping the airway open. Suitable for mild, moderate or severe OSA. As mentioned, you may be able to obtain the equipment via the NHS or you can visit www.EU-PAP.co.uk to purchase privately from Intus. If you have already done a sleep study with Intus or have a Doctor’s prescription in hand, you are free to order equipment as you wish. New patients normally take delivery within 24-48 hours.
-
OAT - Oral Appliance Therapy, a splint worn in the mouth to move the lower jaw slightly forward. This is either a custom-made appliance for mild to moderate OSA, fitted by a Dentist (see www.Oral-Sleep-Therapy.co.uk) or a much lower cost ‘boil & bite’ type device for mild OSA (see www.Somnofit.co.uk) and simple snoring.
-
Surgery – generally irreversible laser throat surgery. Known to be painful, with a low success rate and should be carefully considered before proceeding.
-
Drugs – minimal clinical evidence and to date a low success rate.
-
Novelty ideas – generally low cost and gimmicky with an anecdotal success rate.
In line with current guidelines, Intus offer options 1. 2. and 3. above, because they are known to work extremely well and are used nightly by more than one million patients worldwide. Many state that finally getting treatment for their OSA really did ‘change their life’. |
